Spiritual Bypass
A "spiritual bypass" happens when we shift our attention away from our direct immediate experience and focus instead on some outcome that either 'resolves' our situation or distracts us from it. We try to "fix" a problem or get rid of our uncomfortableness as quickly as possible or try to distract ourselves. We can end up excessively using positive thinking to avoid acknowledging our negative thoughts Or hoping someone else can fix it for us. It is a response to avoiding the pain and being present with it and just bypassing it to pleasure. The thing is, this isn't presence and it's never supportive of our development, no matter how far down the spiritual path we may be. Observing your inner experience takes courage and can cause pain or huge discomfort. Often, we're not even consciously aware of doing the bypass. When we do a spiritual bypass, we're not meeting the need for self-realisation. That means we're not integrating our experiences or shadows and accepting and loving the whole of ourselves. It can mean we are still in the judgement of the self or another. Consequently, we keep hold of the resonance and everything now and then when we are not fully present in suppressing it with all our might it comes up to give us a kick. This is painful and it perpetuates a cycle of pain. It's not always easy to recognise when we are doing a spiritual bypass. However, in circle, this can be upfronted by the presence of the others in the circle who hold a space in loving compassion and often in the circle it can be transmuted. The big ask is the courage to sit with it and with others in the first place.
I'm sorry, please forgive, I love you, thank you.
